Book Review

Lesson Overview

Students will write a review of their favorite book!

Get Started

  • Print a copy of the Op-Ed/Review Graphic Organizer for each student.
  • Head to Pressto to make a copy of the Pressto assignment, adapt it as needed, and assign it to your students.

Tips for using this assignment with your students:

  • Before Writing –  Establish the important elements of a book review with your students. Here are some you might include:

                   > The author takes a stand and states their point of view boldly, clearly, and early on.

                   > The author includes a brief summary *without spoilers* to introduce the book to readers.

                    > The author supports their point of view with evidence from the book, such as the characters, setting, and plot devices.

                    > The author thinks “what do I want my reader to do after reading?” and uses the answer to write with a convincing tone of voice.

  • During Writing - Remind students to have their books with them as they write! They can refer to them for quotes, specific details, and other inspiration.
  • After Writing - Meet up with a buddy class to share book reviews or display them in the school library!
